I have admired the range of shoes from Irregular Choice for quite some time, so it was very exciting to find their booth at Celebration Anaheim advertising an upcoming Star Wars collection! It was hard waiting so long, but now I finally have a pair of R2-D2 heels! While convention attendees could pre-order pairs at Celebration, I had such a hard time trying to narrow down my favourites, so I decided to wait until I could order on-line. I knew the collection was going to be popular, but certain styles/sizes sold out within 15 minutes of the launch – the R2-D2’s were the first to sell out. I had a feeling the R2-D2 heels would be the most sought after, so it was the first style from my wish list that I ordered – and I’m very glad I did! They have just arrived direct from Irregular Choice – and I couldn’t contain my excitement opening the boxes.
The shoes came in a special Irregular Choice x Star Wars cardboard box, with a clear window to show the mint colour printed tissue paper inside. Each shoe was carefully and securely wrapped in white tissue paper – especially around the sculpted R2-D2 heels, which were also wrapped in bubble wrap. Inside the shoes were the standard ‘sticks’ to hold out the heel, again with tissue paper in the toe of the shoes. It was amazing to finally be able to hold my own pair – they are even better in person than I expected!
The R2-D2 shoes are made from a floral print leather with a lace overlay, and blue faux suede. The lace is fused down to the leather underneath, so you can’t snag it accidentally. The toes feature silver eyelets tied with blue velvet bows – a soft feminine touch to the design that I really like. It feels like a long time coming to finally have licensed Star Wars women’s shoes that didn’t look like they were designed for men, so I really appreciate the details of this design that set it apart from previous footwear options. The high heel paired with lace and velvet made this an instant wish list item for me – as well as R2-D2 of course! Irregular Choice are known for their amazing sculpted heels, so as a fan of the brand it was exciting to see sculpted heels in the Star Wars collection. The R2-D2 heel is accurately sculpted, in his classic ‘two leg’ mode – the paint details are nice and tidy all the way around. The area between R2-D2’s legs is filled in black, with the whole sculpt attached to a silver heel base – he feels very sturdy and solidly attached.
The attention to detail is amazing, like the fully embroidered Star Wars and Irregular Choice logos on the hologram insole. The European shoe size number is printed inside, and on the sole. The lace overlay has gold foil thread running through it, a lovely addition to the green and pink floral design of the leather underneath. The edges of all the blue faux suede areas are scalloped, further adding to the softer, feminine design. This design and the ‘I Know’ flats were, for me, the prettiest shoes in the collection, but they still have great attitude to go with any outfit you pair them with. There is a 2cm concealed platform, with a heel height of 12cm (approximately 4 3/4″).
The soles feature images from the A New Hope dvd cover (from 2004), a lovely feature for that glimpse of the sole when you walk – though you will need to protect the soles if you don’t want the image to get eventually worn down (there are sole protectors made specifically for Irregular Choice shoes, like these). I am quite conflicted as to how often I want to wear these shoes – they look so pretty they could live on display as a collectible, on the other hand I want to wear these everyday! I’m so happy to see how successful this footwear collection has been – I really hope to see another Irregular Choice x Star Wars collection available in the future!
