Fans of Star Wars fashion will be familiar with the amazing Rodarte gowns from 2014, but as they were never made available for sale, we could only dream of owning them. Then Thinkgeek came along with a great alternative – Star Wars maxi dresses. A more practical and versatile version of a long gown, that can be worn casually or dressed up – and at a much more affordable price than couture! In particular, the Death Star maxi dress is indeed very similar to one of Rodarte’s gowns, featuring the second Death Star from Return of the Jedi. The dress is made by Mighty Fine, who make many other Star Wars items for women like tulle dresses.
I paid US$29.99 – the dress retails for US$39.99 from Thinkgeek but I had a $10 off code to redeem. I purchased the size small, it measures approximately 42cm across the chest (underarm to underarm), with the leg split measuring approximately 50cm up from the bottom hem. In length the dress measures approximately 132cm from front neckline to bottom hem – the Thinkgeek size chart notes that the length does not change with dress size.
The front is plain black, with a center back seam, while the front features a grayscale print of the Death Star against a starry background. The print stops at the side seams, so there’s no worry about the Death Star image matching up along the seam. The starry background print fades up towards the chest, which I prefer rather than a full all-over effect. The Death Star print itself is very nice, great detail up close but not thickly printed so it doesn’t affect the drape of the dress. The arm holes are a little more dropped than I expected, but still in keeping with a summer dress style. I can see this going great with flats for a casual look, or heels and great Imperial-themed jewelry for an evening out. The dress is still available, in sizes S to 3X from Thinkgeek (they can ship internationally).
