After reacquiring the license, Marvel Comics have just released the first issue of their new Star Wars comic series (grabbed my copy of course), so I thought I’d review a few items in my wardrobe that feature classic Marvel Star Wars artwork. A little while ago I picked up the Empire Strikes Back Hi-Lo tank top from Thinkgeek – I loved it as soon as I saw it. Made by Mighty Fine, the tank top features a full front and back print, which is not that common. The artwork is from The Empire Strikes Back adaptation within the Star Wars comic series by Marvel in 1980, artwork by Al Williamson. The comic panel is the same front and back, just with a slightly different placement – upper left on the front, lower right on the back. The tank top is dark gray with a fuchsia print – the colors work well together, feminine without being overly ‘pink’.
I was a little worried the all over print would make the tank top quite stiff, but it’s not, it’s still fairly soft considering. The fabric has a bit of stretch, but as the print isn’t as thick as I’ve found on some other tops, it doesn’t seem as prone to cracking with stretch. The Thinkgeek website describes this as 100% cotton, but the sewn-in garment tag says ‘50% polyester, 50% cotton’. The tank top has a curved lower hem, and racer back, with binding around the neckline and armholes. I ordered mine in size small – it measures approximately 42cm across the chest (underarm to underarm). I paid US$24.99 from Thinkgeek – it is still available in sizes S – XXXL. It is a fantastic piece, I’ll want to wear it with my hair up to really show off the great artwork.
