Today’s review features three women’s t-shirts from fan apparel label George Shot First. The label celebrates George Lucas as a filmmaker, writer, and director – with a positive perspective. I spoke with George Shot First co-founder Michael O’Connor about the inspiration and message behind the label – you can read the full interview here.
George Shot First have just released ‘wave two’, which includes 3 new t-shirts designs with a ‘Vote Of Confidence’ theme. All of their women’s t-shirts are available in sizes S to 2XL, priced at US$26.00 to US$27.50 each (depending on size) – George Shot First can ship internationally!

Today’s review features the 3 designs from the wave one ‘Special Edition’ collection – ‘Cantina’, ‘Camera Blaster’ and ‘Logo’. These have more of a Star Wars connection than the political style designs in wave two, as the wave one ‘Shot First’ theme references the famous cantina scene from A New Hope. Personally, I prefer the wave one designs – living outside the US, I am less familiar with American political advertising styles, and of course I like apparel with a Star Wars theme!
These women’s t-shirts from George Shot First are the ‘Anvil’ brand, made by Gildan – all 3 are made from ‘ring spun’ 100% cotton (ring spun cotton is said to be more durable and softer than regular cotton). I quite dislike women’s t-shirts with stiff, thick fabric – it’s not comfortable or flattering, so I’m glad to see George Shot First has chosen a nice brand of t-shirt for their women’s styles. All 3 colours are nice and soft, with a good amount of stretch.
The ‘Cantina’ t-shirt features artwork by Pete Soloway, with George Lucas sitting in Han Solo’s pose across the cantina booth from Greedo, a handheld camera in his hand instead of a blaster. This design has the strongest Star Wars connection from these 3 designs, and is my personal favourite as well. The dark fabric colour shows through the design just a little (more noticeable in the white areas), but this helps prolong the life of the print – it stretches well with the fabric (thicker prints tend to ‘crack’ when stretched).
The ‘Camera Blaster’ tee uses a circular design, with a handheld camera in the center, with the text ‘George Shot First’ around the outside. I love the red colour of this t-shirt – in person, it appears closer to the above photo on the left, rather than the close up photo of the design. As a Queen Amidala fan, I like the use of red and yellow together – while this t-shirt design isn’t particularly referencing Episode One, the colour combination is eye catching and easy to read. The central circular print appears thicker than it is, due to it’s opaqueness, but it stretches quite well.
Lastly, the ‘Logo’ t-shirt features the text ‘George Shot First’ in a Star Wars style font. The text is yellow, which stands out well against the black fabric. Despite the fine outlines, the printing is crisp and tidy, and stretches well with the fabric. A simple classic design, referencing the opening title Star Wars logo of yellow text against black.
All 3 of these t-shirts are size small – they measure approximately 42cm to 42.5cm across the chest, 43cm to 47cm across the lower hem, and 53.5cm to 54.5cm from front neckline to front hem. These small variations in measurements are expected in mass produced clothing, though I found the t-shirts are slightly smaller than the size chart on the website. These are women’s tees, not ‘juniors’, so a centimeter or two variation in size is easily within a comfortable fit range.
Overall, these are great t-shirts for any George Lucas fan. The prints look great in person, and all stretch well, which is important for women’s t-shirts. I actually saw ‘American Graffiti’ before I saw Star Wars, and as an artist, I love to see fans celebrating the talented man behind the films we love so much.
