One of the highlights from Force Friday last year was the reveal of the Loungefly BB-8 mini dome handbag. The original R2-D2 dome bag remains one of the most popular designs in the Loungefly x Star Wars range, so it was no surprise to see a matching BB-8 version. The appeal of the cute little droid from The Force Awakens, combined with the fantastic quality of Loungefly products meant this handbag was an instant ‘must have’ item for many fans, including myself!
The BB-8 dome handbag is still available direct from Loungefly, and also from a range of stockists including Thinkgeek, Box Lunch, and from Amazon sellers.

The BB-8 handbag uses the classic Loungefly mini dome bag design, which has become a staple in my Star Wars wardrobe! I own 4 Loungefly mini dome bags now, as I like having options to coordinate with my outfits. I love the size of the mini dome bags, they can easily fit your essentials like wallet, phone and makeup, without being too big.
The handbag came in a black drawstring dust bag, with the classic Star Wars logo printed in silver on one side. Personally I keep the dust bag for my Loungefly bags, but that’s my collector side showing through!
Like the other character dome bags, the front and back of the BB-8 bag are different. The features are of course from BB-8’s top dome ‘head’, with the front featuring the little droid’s ‘eyes’, while the back has the smaller panel details. I like that the character bags have a front and back, it gives the design a little more personality, and they can face the right way when carrying 🙂
The bag is made from patent faux leather, with printed and embossed details. The main section of the bag is white, with orange, grey and black printed sections – the edges of most printed sections are embossed, which adds an extra level of detail to the design.
The bag measures approximately 27cm long, 12cm wide, 22cm tall – with the handles adding a further 10cm or so in height. This is the same size as the other Loungefly x Star Wars mini dome bags (like the popular R2-D2 bag). Originally Loungefly also made a larger standard dome bag (available in the embossed Darth Vader pattern design), but I find I prefer this mini size instead. I haven’t seen Loungefly release any further Star Wars designs in that larger size, so I would say most fans prefer the smaller ‘mini’ size too.
The back of the bag features the Loungefly x Star Wars metal plaque, which is highlighted with black enamel. The metal details of Loungefly bags are always a highlight for me, they really give you the impression of a product designed with quality in mind. The BB-8 bag features silver toned metal hardware – zipper pulls, handle rings, rivets and domes. One of my favourite details of the Loungefly dome bags are the handle rivets – for the BB-8 bag, these feature the Resistance ‘starbird’ symbol.
The bottom of the bag is plain orange, and has four metal stud feet, to avoid scuffing the surface when placed down. The bag features orange piping along all the major seams – this is made from the same orange as the bottom of the bag. The orange patent faux leather isn’t a flat orange, it has a slight shimmer to it, which I love – it softens the bold colour a little.
The bag features a white faux leather band around the lower section of the bag – this is actually glittery/pearlescent close up, which adds another element to the colour scheme. This is a women’s handbag after all, so I appreciate the ‘pretty’ touches to the design.
The top zip is orange with two sturdy silvertone Loungefly zipper pulls, and opens fully down each side. The full length top zip allows easy access to the interior, which is really helpful in rigid-shape handbags.
The interior features Loungefly’s printed Star Wars logo lining fabric – but this time in grey. The lining of most Loungefly x Star Wars items is the black version, so it’s fun to see a variation used here – I think the grey works really well with the BB-8 design. There are two pockets inside – a zip-up pocket on one side, and an open pocket on the other side. The internal zip also features the same zipper pull with Loungefly logo as the exterior zipper – I really like the sturdy feel of these zips.
While I never thought I would be eager to add an orange handbag to my wardrobe, this was a must-have item for me. I can always rely on the quality of Loungefly’s bags, and I love having my own helpful droid to look after my stuff!
