Today’s review features the Loungefly x Star Wars Rey hair bow. Inspired by Rey’s Jakku outfit in The Force Awakens, the cosplay style bow features printed and sculpted details including Rey’s quarterstaff. I have a growing collection of Loungefly Star Wars hair bows – this one is perhaps my favourite so far!
Be fearless with your ‘do. This cosplay hair bow from Star Wars: The Force Awakens has a design inspired by elements of Rey’s costume, including her quarterstaff!
The hair bow is priced at US$9.90 each – while Her Universe is restricted to shipping their own Star Wars apparel within the US/Canada, it appears they can ship Loungefly items internationally. The bow was also available at Box Lunch and Hot Topic, but it is currently out of stock online (it may still be available at physical stores).
Loungefly Rey hair bow – US$9.90 each (currently 20% off – US$7.92 each)
The bow came packaged on a black cardboard backing card. The front features the Star Wars and Disney logos printed in white, while the back also includes the Loungefly logo and pricing sticker. The bow clips through a cut-out in the centre of the card.
The hair bow features four loops, and two tail strands. The loops are made from two different fabrics – the top loops are made from a cream colour burlap-type fabric, while the bottom loops are made from a beige colour ribbon. The tails are made from the same burlap-type fabric as the top loops, with raw edges. These tails resemble the long fabric sashes of Rey’s costume that hang down around her legs. Due to the frayed edges, I handle this part with care, to avoid loosing too many threads.
Three of the bow loops feature printed details – the right top loop features the Resistance ‘starbird’ symbol printed in a rust-brown colour, while the bottom two ribbon loops feature printed details resembling belts and pouches. The printing on the ribbons is especially neat and tidy, with black border lines to define the details.
The bow measures approximately 13cm across at the widest parts, and approximately 10cm tall, not including the tails.
The centre of the bow is bound together with an orange ribbon. The join is hidden underneath the decorations glued down on the front. While the colour is a little more orange toned than the leather used on Rey’s costume, it matches the bow design well.
At the front, a small faux suede bag is attached to the centre binding ribbon – this resembles Rey’s belt bag. I was surprised to see that this bag is a full bag shape, not just the front shape – if the top flap wasn’t glued down, you would able to store very tiny items inside!
Of course, one of the highlights of this bow is the 3D sculpted quarterstaff. It has dark metallic finish, and is glued to the centre binding ribbon, underneath the little faux suede bag. The staff measures approximately 9.8cm long – a little shorter than the bow loops. The staff feels quite sturdy – the packaging doesn’t note if it is made from plastic or metal.
Compared to other Loungefly x Star Wars hair bows, this Rey bow is slightly heavier, due to the additional decorations. This bow is also larger than others in the series, like the Chewbacca or Yoda hair bows which have a 2-loop ‘bow tie’ style, rather than the full 4 loops used here. I like the larger design for this Rey bow, it allows for more costume elements to be represented.
The back of the hair bow features a silver-tone metal alligator-style hair clip. The clip is inserted underneath the centre binding ribbon, and is glued securely in place. The clip measures approximately 6.2cm long, which is a good size for holding securely in place. The spring of the clip is quite tight, so it can hold the weight of the clip in your hair quite well. Due to the direction of the clip, I find it easier to wear on the left side of my head, rather than the right.
There is also a very small white tag on the back of the bow, which features the Loungefly and Star Wars logos and copyright information. It is easy to tuck this out of the way under the clip, or you can cut it off entirely.
Unlike earlier Loungefly x Star Wars hair bows (like this Chewbacca bow), this Rey hair bow does not have an additional brooch clip. Personally, I never wore these bows as a brooch, so I found the additional clip tended to be unnecessary. Of course if you do prefer to wear this bow as a brooch with your outfit, it is easy enough to glue/sew a brooch clip onto the back.
This hair bow is a cute accessory for any Rey themed outfit. The fabrics and details capture Rey’s Jakku outfit very well – the quarterstaff is so cute in miniature scale! I hope Loungefly makes a hair bow themed on Rey’s new jedi training outfit (complete with lightsaber), and also other female Star Wars characters like Queen Amidala!
