This pin was originally released as a convention exclusive at San Diego Comic Con 2018, but thankfully left over stock is now available online. The pins were sold in ‘blind box’ packaging, but the online listings are for each specific pin, which is great if you want a specific character.
The packaging is a simple black cardboard box, with the pin stored loose inside.
The set contains five character pins – Chewbacca, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Stormtrooper, and Darth Vader. Princess Leia was a hidden character, so those who bought the original blind boxes at SDCC didn’t know what the fifth character was.
I am curious why Luke Skywalker wasn’t included in the initial wave? In any case, I am so excited that Princess Leia was featured in this range. Too often the ‘face’ characters get left out from designs in favour of ‘helmeted’ characters or droids – Leia definitely deserves to be featured in accessories more.
The pin features a line art design inspired by the vintage Kenner Princess Leia A New Hope action figure. This pin is advertised as ‘lifesize’ in that it is the same size as the original action figure – but it’s just a little bit smaller. This pin measures approximately 83mm tall and 37mm wide (at the widest part) – the vintage 1978 Kenner figure measures approximately 88m tall.
Personally, I love that this pin isn’t pure white, it’s more of a cream tone. This is great reference to the vintage action figure – the white plastic of vintage Kenner action figures have a tendency to so slightly yellow with age, so it’s normal for the Leia figure to not be pure white.
The detail on this pin is impressive – there is even little black detail lines in Leia’s hair. The enamel has a lovely glossy finish, which feels very smooth when held. It can be hard to capture simple facial features well in line art, but this pin design is a great representation of the original action figure sculpt.
The back of the pin is black, with a subtle textured finish. This pin has two fixtures, so it doesn’t swing or spin when worn – very useful for a tall pin design like this. The pin backs are black rubber, which fit on nice and securely.
As this is an officially licensed Star Wars product, there is raised copyright text on the back – “© 2018 LFL & TM © 2018 GGLTD Made In China”, with the Gentle Giant Ltd logo on the left.
As a collector, I am trying to resist falling too far down the pin collecting rabbit hole, but this was just such a neat design, I had to have it! I loved the idea of true-to-scale vintage action figure pins, and the simple vintage action figure design translates really well into line art for pins.
