One item of merchandise for the Run Disney Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend that caught my attention was the necklace. This was available to pre-order when purchasing race tickets – and not wanting to miss out, I bought one with my Rebel Challenge registration. At the time, there was no photo/image of the necklace, so the first time I saw it was in person when picking it up with my registration at the event expo. The necklace cost US$21.95 – the same price whether purchased as a pre-order or bought in person at the expo (it was on the same rack as the collectible pins).
The necklace came packaged on a cardboard jewelry backing card which has an all-over ‘Mickey Ears’ embossed pattern. The silver tone necklace features two pendants – the first is a flat shape pendant with the text ‘2016 Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend’, while the second pendant is a 3D sculpt of a running shoe which features the Run Disney logo on one side, and 2016 on the other side. The ‘0’ of 2016 is created with gems in the classic ‘Mickey Ears’ shape – the gems are the same colour as the Star Wars logo. The two pendants hang freely, in that they are not fixed to the necklace chain – this means they tend to knock together a little when worn. The charms are easy to remove – the hanger rings of both pendants are wide enough to slip off the open end of the chain, so you can choose to wear one pendant at a time if you prefer (the charms are also a good size for attaching to a charm bracelet). The shoe pendant design has been used on other Run Disney necklaces – but this one of course features the year, and the gems match the colour used for the Star Wars logo.
The underside of the shoe pendant has a little ‘tread’ print, while the back of the Star Wars pendant features the Run Disney logo and standard copyright text ‘(c) Disney China (C) & TM LucasFilm LTD’. The Star Wars pendant measures approximately 16mm tall by 24mm wide by 2mm deep (at the widest parts), while the shoe pendant measures approximately 19mm long by 7mm wide by 9mm tall (at the widest parts). The necklace chain measures approximately 52cm long, and closes with a standard circular necklace clasp. I am a little cautious about possibly scratching the coloured part of the Star Wars logo pendant – it is not recessed/enamelled, so I’m not sure how durable the print is.
Having bought the necklace before knowing what it looked like, I’m really happy I ordered it. I can wear both pendants together or separately, as a great memento of the event. As the pendants don’t mention Disneyland specifically, I’m curious to see if this design will be sold at the upcoming Star Wars ‘Dark Side’ Half Marathon Weekend at Walt Disney World in April – or perhaps we’ll see a red ‘Dark Side Challenge’ version to match this ‘Rebel Challenge’ version in blue?
